Graphics giant for professionals: the new Huion Kamvas Pro 24 (Gen 3) on the test bench

Huion has developed the new Kamvas Pro 24 (Gen 3) especially for professional creatives. With its 4K display, new pen technology and extensive range of accessories, drawing is great fun.

The heart of the Kamvas Pro 24 (Gen 3) lies in the stylus: the new Pentech 4.0 technology, which I use to draw extremely fine lines and details. Thanks to 4K resolution, these come across really crisply.

Large 4K display with touch control

The IPS display of the Kamvas Pro 24 (Gen 3) has a size of 24 inches. The panel is laminated with anti-reflective glass. This is intended to improve brightness and colour accuracy while also extending its service life. It has a 4K resolution (3840 × 2160 pixels) and a pixel density of 185 PPI. The refresh rate of 60 hertz is sufficient for smooth movements. Thanks to the touch function, control is possible directly on the screen - now also on macOS devices.

The tablet is well made and has an anti-reflective coating.

The Kamvas is a massive piece of equipment. With a weight of 6.4 kilos and a size of 59 × 36 × 2.3 centimetres, the Kamvas Pro 24 is best stationary. It's not for travelling and needs a second device to which I can connect it. Whether PC or notebook doesn't matter.

Large scope of delivery with screen calibrator

Huion supplies the Kamvas Pro 24 (Gen 3) with a range of accessories. You will find the necessary USB-C and USB-A cables in the box. A microfibre cloth is also included, as well as a glove to prevent sweaty hands from sticking to the display. There are also three other extremely practical products.

Shortcut keyboard

The Shortcut Keyboard is ideal when I want to get by without a touchscreen or execute commands quickly. The new model has a built-in LC display. This allows me to flexibly programme the desired shortcuts on the keys and they are still always correctly labelled.

The new shortcut keyboard has a display for labelling.

In the Huion software, I define the keys and can assign them to the respective computer programs. Adobe Photoshop, for example, has different shortcuts to Clip Studio Paint. Depending on the programme that is currently open, the keyboard automatically adjusts the labels.

The major drawback: the software reacts incorrectly to my keyboard with the Swiss layout. For example, it recognises a Y instead of a Z or a - instead of a +. That's why I have to rethink and try out which shortcuts work and which don't. Unfortunately, not all of the programmed shortcuts work either.

Screen calibration via Windows PC

The Kamvas Pro 24 (Gen 3) already comes with a calibration (including certificate) and has good colour accuracy in all areas:

  • 99 per cent sRGB
  • 99 per cent Adobe RGB
  • 98 per cent DCI-P3
  • 98 per cent Display P3

This is important for animators or photographers if the colour display needs to be as accurate as possible in order to pass on the artwork to third parties. As displays display colours slightly differently with age than they did at the beginning, it makes sense to recalibrate them from time to time.

Huion addresses the topic of colour fidelity in an exemplary manner with the GTColor colourimeter. However, it only works with a Windows device; drivers for Apple and Android devices are not yet available. As I use the tablet on a Macbook, this test is not applicable.

I use the GTColor to calibrate the display.

The calibration sounds simple according to the instructions: I connect the GTColor to my Windows computer, place the calibrator on the display of the Kamvas Pro 24 and follow the instructions of the software.

The new stylus

Huion includes two different styluses. One is slightly thicker than the other and has one more programmable button. Both support the new Pentech 4.0 technology, thanks to which the pens offer 16,384 pressure levels for extreme precision and nuance. Even the softest strokes are reliably recognised. This is particularly useful for fine details and shading.

Two pens in a case with an additional ten tips are included.

I also have two pen tips to choose from. One is a little harder and is good for details and outlines. The second tip feels like a fibre-tip pen. I find it particularly pleasant when colouring in my pictures. However, it wears out a little faster: after just five hours of colouring, I notice a shiny tip due to abrasion on the display. In this case, Huion includes ten replacement tips, five of each type. Purchasing replacements is also possible and is reasonably priced at just under one franc/euro per tip.

The harder tip on the left, the felt tip on the far right is already a little worn.

Setup: finally touch!

A power cable and a USB-C cable from the laptop to the graphics tablet are sufficient for my Macbook. When connecting the tablet to a Windows computer, I need one more with the HDMI cable. This is all included in the scope of delivery.

The Kamvas Pro 24 Gen 3 supports the following operating systems:

  • From Windows 10
  • from macOS 10.12
  • From Android 6.0
  • Linux (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS)

The device can be set up quickly thanks to the fold-out feet. If you prefer a higher and movable stand, accessories are available. These can be attached to the back thanks to built-in screws.

A headphone connection and two USB-A ports for a keyboard or my smartphone are located on the side.

With two cables and two feet, the graphics tablet is quickly ready for use.

I can then start drawing straight away with my stylus of choice. I prefer to calibrate the pen in the software. Then the accuracy of my strokes is just right. They never need to be loaded.

The tablet now has touch support for Apple devices. I can find the software required for this on the Huion website.

Drawing on such a large display is a dream

According to the specifications, there are hardly any changes from the older Huion Kamvas Pro 24 (4K) to the new Huion Kamvas Pro 24 (Gen 3). However, Huion has adapted the display: The new anti-reflective (AR) glass instead of the original anti-glare (AG) glass feels nice and smooth, while still offering a gentle resistance.

The display is not extremely bright at 250 nits, but that's good enough for indoors. The matt coating also helps. I am extremely satisfied when drawing with the Kamvas Pro 24 (Gen 3). It runs smoothly, even when drawing quickly. I can also easily switch between the two pens for outlining and colouring my pictures.

I'm happy with the result. I'm sure Zorro is too.

Thanks to the fine pressure level recognition, these pens are particularly fun to use. I find this particularly useful for shading and small details.

I am disappointed with the new touch support for macOS. Although it works in theory, the function lags behind on my Macbook (M1 chip). Especially when I want to zoom or rotate my screen, there are annoying pauses - or the device doesn't recognise my inputs. In addition, the screen moves unintentionally when I place my hand on the display. The palm recognition function doesn't seem to be fully developed yet.

For my workflow, I therefore utilised the slider at the top of the tablet: this switches the touch function on and off. If I'm engrossed in painting, I switch the touch function off. If I need it to move the canvas, I switch it on again.

I use the slider on the right to deactivate the touch function.

In a nutshell

High-quality tablet with great accessories

The Kamvas Pro 24 (Gen 3) is aimed at demanding users in the fields of graphic design, illustration and animation. The tablet has precise colour space coverage for all these areas. The display also has a high-quality finish and prevents reflections and scratches. With 24 inches, you have plenty of space for your artwork. Thanks to new pen technology, it delivers high precision for detailed work. In addition to the two pens, Huion also includes other practical accessories.

This also has its price: at around 1400 francs (RRP), the device is definitely in the upper league.

My points of criticism relate solely to software weaknesses: The touch function under macOS works unreliably and the shortcut keyboard doesn't take over all my programmed shortcuts. It's also a shame that the colourimeter only works under Windows.

If you are satisfied with the previous accessories, the Kamvas Pro 24 (4K) would also be an option. With this you save 400 francs (RRP).

If you want to halve the purchase price, I recommend the Kamvas Pro 19. It offers the same pen technology as the Pro 24 (Gen 3), but has standard accessories and a smaller surface area.

Pro

  • Outstanding 4K display with excellent colour space coverage
  • Pentech 4.0 offers a natural and precise drawing feel
  • Extensive professional accessories (shortcut keyboard with display & colourimeter) included
  • Finally touch support for macOS

Contra

  • Software weaknesses in keyboard programming (layout conflicts)
  • Touch performance and Palm Rejection still unreliable under macOS
  • Colourimeter software currently only available for Windows

Ever since I learned how to hold a pen, I've been doodling away in bright colours. Thanks to my iPad, digital art has also become part of my life. That's why I love testing tablets – from the graphic design range to the regular kind. When I feel the urge to express my creativity without lugging lots of equipment, I go for the latest smartphones and start snapping away.
