Huawei Watch GT 7 Pro: a proper test would require the mountains

More data for skiers, warnings about sharp turns ahead for bikers: the Huawei Watch GT 7 Pro has a few new tricks up its sleeve. For a review, however, I’m more focussed on other qualities.

The Huawei Watch GT 7 Pro stands out with its long battery life, numerous sensors and a whole array of sports. This alone is enough to impress me. However, I wasn’t able to try out the major new features for skiing and mountain biking, as I’m located in Hamburg.

Sturdy Smartwatch with a new strap

With a diameter of 45.6 and a height of 11.25 millimetres, the Watch GT 7 Pro is quite a whopper. Personally, I don’t mind the chunkiness, nor does it bother me while exercising or sleeping. For people with slimmer wrists than me, however, it’s probably not ideal.

The 1.47-inch Amoled display, with a resolution of 466 × 466 pixels, shows content in sharp detail. With up to 3,000 nits, you can see what’s on the screen even in direct sunlight.

Huawei has gone for a sturdy design with the Watch GT 7 Pro, as it’s also made for outdoor sports. Sapphire glass protects the display from scratches and other damage. The case is made of a durable titanium alloy, and the back is made of ceramic. The watch is water- and dust-resistant in line with IP68 and IP69. The manufacturer also states that the watch can withstand pressure up to 5 ATM and is suitable for diving to a depth of 40 metres.

A new wristband is included with the Watch GT 7 Pro. It’s made of plastic, is 22 millimetres wide and fits wrist circumferences ranging from 140 to 210 millimetres. A nice little extra is that you can tuck away the excess part of the wristband by sliding it underneath. That way, it won’t catch on anything. If you want to give the watch a more elegant look, you’ll need to buy an additional wristband. The clasp is easy to use, but it doesn’t conform to any standard I’m familiar with.

One charge a month or run GPS for more than a day

As with the previous model, Huawei promises that the Watch GT 7 Pro delivers up to 21 days of battery life with light use. This is only the case as long as GPS remains disabled and you haven’t constantly activated all sensors. For standard use, with multiple activated sensors and occasional location tracking, it should still last twelve days. If you have GPS constantly switched on, you should be able to track an activity such as trail running for 51 hours. The lithium-ion polymer battery has a capacity of 867 mAh. Using the included charging puck, the battery is fully charged in just over 90 minutes.

I turn on all the watch’s sensors and enable all notifications. This uses up two to three per cent of its battery charge within 24 hours. This is an improvement over the Watch GT 6 Pro, which uses four to five per cent. If I extrapolate the figures for the Watch GT 7 Pro, this means the battery life is over 30 days. That’s significantly more than Huawei promises.

Tracking activities with GPS increases battery depletion. During a 70-minute bike ride, the smartwatch uses two to three per cent of its charge. Depending on whether I estimate two or three per cent per hour, I either end up with the number of hours specified by Huawei or less. But even 38 hours of continuous GPS tracking is enough for my athletic activities.

Focus on sports and recreation

I went hiking, biking, swimming and to the gym with the Watch GT 7 Pro. And it always provided me with consistent data afterwards. Whenever a GPS connection was required, it located my position in just a few seconds and recorded it accurately. When I was swimming, I set the length of the lane and the watch kept track of my turns. In total, there are over 100 sports to choose from for tracking.

After a workout, the GT 7 Pro shows you the training load and estimates how long you should rest. After 30 minutes at the gym, it tells me I should rest for four hours. After nearly two hours on my bike, the watch suggests taking a break for over two days. To better assess recovery, Huawei has introduced a new metric called the Physical Readiness Score. It uses various data during your nighttime sleep and daytime activity to assess how well rested your body is and whether you’re ready to work out again. I’m happy to report that the score matches how my body feels. However, with this in mind, it makes me wonder why I need it in the first place.

Although I haven’t fully recovered, I’m in the green for my next workout session.

The little panda’s pretty cute. It keeps prompting me to do mini-workouts throughout the day. They’re pretty easy, as the bear only chooses one exercise at a time from his selection. This adds a little more movement to my daily routine, and as a reward, I gradually unlock landmarks to display on the watch face. Honestly, they’re not really an incentive for me.

The Watch GT 7 Pro features Curve Pay, a mobile payment supplier. You can easily set it up in the EU using the smartphone app and use it to pay with your watch. Wonderful! However, Curve Pay can’t be set up in Switzerland, as you must have an account in the EU.

A quick way to see if there are any unusual changes in your health.

The Watch GT 7 Pro measures your heart rate, blood oxygen levels and stress. It also monitors your sleep. You can track your emotional well-being and there’s also a menstrual cycle calendar. It displays the various measurement results as health insights in a way that’s easy to understand. If your values change significantly, the watch will alert you. So far, everything’s looking fine for me.

In a nutshell

Only worth getting if you’re a skier

The Huawei Watch GT 7 Pro impresses with its very long battery life. In addition, it’s comfy, provides a wealth of data and tracks countless sports. The smartwatch is durable and has a display that’s easy to read.

However, it doesn’t feature many new things. It only makes sense to go for this latest version if you do a lot of skiing or biking in the mountains. The affordable Huawei Watch Fit 5 Prois probably your best bet, unless you’re dead set on having a round watch.

As a primary school pupil, I used to sit in a friend's living room with many of my classmates to play the Super NES. Now I get my hands on the latest technology and test it for you. In recent years at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, now at Digitec and Galaxus.
