Cat litter box closed, Self-cleaning litter tray

Fans of the Litter Robots litter trays should be pleased: the 5-series brings interesting new functions. However, there are also additional costs.
Cat toilets are no longer just toilets, but mini monitoring centres. Toilet visits, weight - everything is recorded and measured. Whisker is now going one step further: the manufacturer of litter robots relies on artificial intelligence and facial recognition.
Until now, the Litter-Robot 4 recognised up to four cats in a household using an integrated scale. The Litter-Robot 5 Pro builds on this and comes with additional sensors and a revised design.
In concrete terms, this means that cameras are used to recognise cats and keep them apart. The waste analysis has also been expanded: the system should be able to better distinguish what exactly ends up in the litter tray. This should enable usage patterns to be recognised more accurately and cleaning cycles to be better controlled.
All models now have an LCD display instead of simple LED displays. The waste bin has also been enlarged.
The 5-series consists of three models that are connected to the Whisker app:
Litter-Robot Evo (699 euros)
LCD display, no camera, no AI tracking, no advanced analysis functions. Suitable for smaller households with up to two cats.
Litter-Robot 5 (999 euros)
LCD display, no camera, but advanced sensor technology and new functions for usage recording. Suitable for up to five cats.
Litter-Robot 5 Pro (launch expected in 2027)
Includes all the functions of the LR5 plus additional AI functions such as cat identification cameras, detailed health and activity analyses and advanced monitoring features.
Watch out: The US prices are not directly transferable to Europe, as they are stated without VAT. The following launch is currently planned for Europe and Switzerland:
Litter-Robot Evo and Litter-Robot 5: Market launch expected in October 2026
Litter-Robot 5 Pro: Market launch planned for 2027 (date not yet finally confirmed)

In addition, Whisker is introducing an optional subscription service: Whisker Plus. This is designed to analyse toilet behaviour over the long term and provide detailed health insights. This includes historical analyses and access to stored activity data. According to the manufacturer, this could help to recognise changes in health at an early stage. Video recordings of activity should also be available.
The price is USD 7.99 per month or USD 79.99 per year. The exact launch date for Whisker Plus in Europe and Switzerland has not yet been confirmed.
It remains to be seen whether the AI functions of the new 5-series really work as well in everyday life as the manufacturers promise. Improvements in cleaning and odour control should certainly be practical. But one thing is already clear: The appliances will be significantly smarter - and therefore also a little more complex. Depending on usage, this may mean that more processes run via the app and additional functions are linked to services or settings.

I love everything with four legs or roots – especially my rescue cats Jasper and Joy and my collection of succulents. I’m happiest following the scent of stories about police dogs and cat groomers – or cultivating thoughtful tales in garden flea markets and Japanese gardens.
