With the dark season approaching, the topic of dog lighting is coming to the fore. Our Silken Windsprite puppy has therefore been wearing the Niggeloh Follow Light Lichtblick for three weeks. The harness fits well and is easy to put on – however, I am only half convinced by the lighting elements.
The days are getting shorter, and with the upcoming time change, it will get dark even earlier in the evening. By now at the latest, visibility is an issue when walking the dog: I want others to see him so that he is safe.
In our case, a Silken Windsprite puppy has been part of the family for three weeks. The little one doesn't follow every command yet, so it is all the more important that he is seen. I therefore put the Niggeloh Follow Light Lichtblick harness on him, which features light-emitting elements that charge in daylight. There are four things I like about it, and one I like less.
The harness is made of a mix of soft neoprene, leather, and webbing. It is lightweight and feels good. Thanks to the padding on the chest and back, it does not chafe or pinch. The puppy also seems to like it: he hardly notices it and even falls asleep wearing it.

The seams are clean and the buckles make a good impression – even if they are "only" made of plastic. The harness is also reinforced at the ring for attaching the leash. Cool: The item is made in Germany.

The Follow Light does not have to be pulled over the head. It is placed around the neck, fastened at the front of the chest, and two more clicks under the belly do the rest. In total, there are three buckles. After putting it on two or three times, our puppy got used to the harness and lets us put it on easily and willingly.

Thanks to the adjustable straps, I can adapt the harness to his build. This is practical for a puppy, as the little one grows from five to seven kilos during the test period. At the beginning, the harness in XXS is still a bit too big for him, but by pulling the strap, it can be tightened. The pull point sits low on the sternum, so the windpipe remains free if the puppy ever jumps into the leash.

The material is water-repellent. This is an advantage; should it rain, it won't get heavy or chafe. Dirt can simply be wiped off with a damp cloth, after which I hang it up briefly so that the moisture can fully bead off.
The Follow Light has light-emitting elements that charge in daylight. They do this relatively quickly. However, they lose their luminosity just as quickly. Even if I leave the harness out to charge all day, it hardly has any luminosity left after about half an hour – and that luminosity isn't very strong to begin with.

At least: The elements reflect headlight beams. This helps with visibility, but does not replace an active light. During the morning walk at dawn, I have to use one of those.
I see the advantage more in the evening twilight. If a walk lasts longer than planned and extends into dusk or darkness, the elements have soaked up light during the day and glow. Nevertheless, I would still prefer to use an additional light even then.
