The hottest piece of furniture right now isn’t even furniture

By now you’ll have noticed them everywhere – display pedestals. Here’s what makes them so special and how you can make these objects of desire your own.

The latest trend pieces are usually found in art galleries and museums. Now they’re taking on the task of beautifying our interiors. Display pedestals are naturally appearing alongside furniture on social media profiles such as that of designer Eny Lee Parker or interior designer Josh Greene. Not only do they now appear to be an integral part of interior design, they’ve also been redesigned. For example, designer Charlotte Kidger has given them an antique look with a base in the shape of a Corinthian column. Sculptor Yasmin Bawa, on the other hand, makes curved plinths that could be artworks. And brands Studio Cubbe and Ferm Living put tiles on their pedestals, reminding me of a bathroom floor.

Benefits of display pedestals

The great thing about all these display pedestals? They bring out the little things in a big way and keep a low profile themselves. I think that’s very classy of a piece of furniture that isn’t really furniture at all. In museums, its sole purpose is to display art. Now it’s becoming a little more homely, as it can be used as a side table to hold a bouquet of flowers. Display pedestals are also available in different materials, including wood, metal, glass and acrylic. Therefore, like other furniture, they can round off a certain interior style. Another plus point – the taller the stand, the larger the room appears as your view is directed upwards.

Arranging

In addition to art, hanging plants on gallery pedestals, for example, really come into their own as the height allows them to grow freely. Table lamps shine even without light because they’re slightly more visible. Display pedestals are perfect for staging individual or multiple items. For the latter, first sort by size and shape and make sure that some items overlap. Small, narrow objects to the front, large, wider ones at the back. If two things are the same size, put some books or magazines underneath for height differences and a banal arrangement becomes museum-worthy…
