Power over Ethernet (PoE) allows compatible devices to be powered via the network cable. This reduces cabling efforts, especially for end devices like wireless access points, IP phones, and IP cameras, while also providing high flexibility in device placement.

The IEEE 802.3at standard provides a maximum of 25.4 watts of power on each PoE port with a voltage of up to 50 volts. The standard assumes that after line losses, 21.90 watts of usable power remain to avoid exceeding the maximum power output. For PoE, a Cat5e/6 cable with a maximum length of 100 m is recommended.
