The Z fc is - after the Z 50 - a renewed Nikon commitment to the APS-C format as a constant size alongside 35mm. But the new camera is even more than that: it is a modern system camera designed with a love of detail in the look of classic SLR models of the FM/FE series, with which Nikon was able to celebrate success, especially in the 1980s...

- Strong image quality! Very good resolution up to high light sensitivities
- Fast hybrid AF system
- Very good viewfinder & touchmonitor
- Appealing retro design
- Without pop-up flash
- Without integrated image stabilisation

If you like retro design and operation, the Z fc is a very good camera that achieves similar results to Fuji's X-E4 and X-T30. It is the first Nikon Z camera to be equipped with a monitor that folds out to the side. However, the older Nikon Z 50 performs minimally better in our test and costs 150 euros less according to street prices - so it gets the price tip...

- The Z fc combines the compactness of an APS-C camera with the outstanding optical performance made possible by Nikon's Z bayonet system. Operation is classic thanks to the retro design.
- Without the missing grip bead, the Z fc is not quite as handy as the full-frame Z models. An integrated flash is missing. There would have been room for it in the viewfinder hump, but it would detract from the retro design.
With the Z fc, Nikon takes up a concept that the company developed with the Nikon Df for digital full-frame SLRs. State-of-the-art digital camera technology is packed into a retro housing whose operation is also reminiscent of analogue times thanks to many dials. In the case of the new Nikon Z fc, the result is a very compact, lightweight yet powerful camera that is a joy to shoot...
The Nikon Zfc not only looks really good, it also shoots really good photos and videos - the small system camera does not have to hide from larger and more expensive full-frame models. Operation is easy, even for beginners. The disadvantage of the 80s look is that it lacks a handle - the Zfc becomes unwieldy with large and heavy lenses.
