No, it shouldn't be normal and I know Kindle/Tolino and PocketBook, although I think the PocketBook model series (software) is "rubbish" and would rather recommend a Tolino. The question is whether it's the book or the device. There is also a web interface for reading the books you have on the PocketBook. I would try that and see if there are any problems with navigating the book. My wife used a PocketBook for a long time and apart from it being sluggish and the software being tedious, it actually worked reliably. Also check if there is a software update available.
