Prices in online shops can change dynamically on a daily basis. This can have different reasons. Here is an interesting article: https://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/wirtschaft/unternehmen-und-konjunktur/Mal-kostet-der-Staubsauger-159-dann-175-und-ploetzlich-168-Franken/story/27950392

Hello. This is a NAS, i.e. a network storage device. This means that the device is connected to your network via a network cable (Ethernet). All devices that are then in the same network can access the device simultaneously. Since the device does not have a WIFI adapter, you will certainly need a switch or router to connect your home network to the device.

The My Cloud EX2 Ultra is a NAS device that is mainly connected to a network via an Ethernet cable. It has USB ports, but these are not intended for direct connection to a PC for data transfer. Instead, the data is usually transferred via the network. If you want to transfer data from a USB device to the NAS, you can connect the device to the NAS and manage the data via the My Cloud Dashboard, but the primary connection is via Ethernet.

Yes, you can use the My Cloud EX2 Ultra as network storage for both Mac and PC and set up backups for both devices at the same time. - Network storage: The My Cloud EX2 Ultra offers centralised network storage that allows you to store and share files, photos, documents and other data from both Mac and PC. It supports both Windows and macOS and allows data to be accessed from anywhere. - Time Machine for Mac: You can configure the My Cloud EX2 Ultra as a destination for Time Machine backups of your Mac. This allows you to store regular backups of your Mac on the NAS. - Backup for PC: For PCs, you can use various backup options offered by the My Cloud EX2 Ultra. For example, you can use the NAS's built-in backup tool or third-party software to perform regular backups of your PC data. Overall, the My Cloud EX2 Ultra is well suited to serve as a centralised backup and storage solution for both platforms.

Mirroring worked for me, everything I needed was included, but I now work without mirroring and use the entire memory. I didn't have any charges. When mirroring, only half of the memory is available. External hard drives for additional storage are also no problem.

I would no longer buy the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra as a NAS because Western Digital has a very peculiar update policy for the firmware. There is a lot of information about this on the Internet, e.g. here: https://www.digitec.ch/de/page/western-digital-zwingt-my-cloud-user-zum-update-28394 Furthermore, I cannot recommend WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra as a NAS because, among other things, it is also very slow.

I don't know if this is a good idea, because replacing hard drives in a 2 bay NAS system will be necessary again at some point. I would recommend a new NAS instead, e.g. a Synology DS418, they are not expensive, but can be expanded very well with up to 4 hard drives. I would either sell the existing WD NAS completely or use it as a backup solution for the new NAS to save the most important data. Or you can take the two 4 TB disks in the DS418 and buy another one for 3 x 4 TB. This way you also get 8 TB gross capacity, but you don't have to discard any hard drives. In general, you can also assume that a 48 watt power supply unit is probably more difficult to obtain, and those with 60 watts often cost up to 100 francs.

There's a fan in it, and there are tips on the internet that they are not always quiet. My recommendation would be to invest in a real NAS, which costs a bit more, but you can do a lot more with it than with a WD NAS and there is also support and updates for years, so that would definitely be better and these fans in the Synology NAS, they are practically silent: Synology DS220+ (2 x 1 TB, Seagate Ironwolf)

Yes, you can use both disks as JBOD (just a bunch of disks) or RAID0, but you will never get the full 36 GB anyway, because it should be more like 35 plus/minus. But: if you set up a NAS like this as RAID0, if one disk fails, all the data is lost. I recommend a NAS, because you can work with smaller disks and a NAS will cost less in the long run, because the question is not if the disks will fail, only when. They will all fail, sooner or later, and a NAS with hardware failure protection and RAID5 is much cheaper. And I also recommend a NAS that gets much more support. This one is much more powerful (4 core and 4GB RAM, expandable, can also run virtual machines, you can also install additional programmes): Synology DS920+ (0 TB) Plus 4 x 12 TB Seagate Ironwolf: Seagate IronWolf (12 TB, 3.5", CMR) This solution is a bit more expensive, but it gives you 36 TB of storage and if one disk fails, you only need to buy a 12 TB disk as a replacement, which is cheaper than an 18 TB disk. Later expansion to double the storage capacity would also be possible, because by replacing each 12 TB disc with a larger one, you can expand the capacity without disconnecting the NAS from the network.

It is not a general service setting. This only applies to systems with the old My Cloud OS 3 and devices running with it are not completely unusable. The current version is My Cloud OS 5. https://www.macwelt.de/news/Warum-Sie-Ihr-altes-NAS-von-Western-Digital-ausmustern-sollten-11145345.html

Für dieses Gerät müsste ein upgrade von OS3 auf OS5 möglich sein. For this device, an upgrade from OS3 to OS5 should be possible. https://www.westerndigital.com/support/product-security/wdc-21004-recommended-upgrade-to-mycloud-os-5 https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/30092/

Hello Stefan, in principle yes, but the cloud does not have its own W-Lan, only LAN, access from outside to your cloud is adjustable and possible. It is pointed out that the Cloud can only be used as a backup option to a limited extent. To say more you have to define your question more precisely, Greetings Thomas

Hello - there are 2 alternatives: a) create 2 users on the device (see chapter 5 in the manual https://documents.westerndigital.com/content/dam/doc-library/de_de/assets/public/wd/product/nas/my_cloud/ex2_ultra/user-manual-my-cloud-expert-series-ex2-ultra.pdf) or b) via router (then it will be more difficult at best) but this way the access to individual IPs could be limited. I would advise against a WD NAS, they are toy NAS which are not worth much. It would therefore be better to buy a real NAS, e.g. the Synology DS218play, which is a very well-equipped NAS that can also do something (even 4K transcoding) and also offers much better security and years of updates: Synology DS218play (WD Red Plus) The DS218Play offers a Quad Core processor with 4 x 1.4 GHz with fast DDR4 RAM, while the WD device has an ancient 1.3 GHz Dual Core CPU with outdated DDR3 RAM. The brochure conveys ultra, but the only thing I can tell is that these WD devices are ultra old.
