Thermal Grizzly

The AMD Ryzen 7000 Direct Die Frame from Thermal Grizzly is a CPU mounting frame designed for installing Ryzen 7000 processors without the integrated heat spreader. By omitting the heat spreader, the CPU cooler can be mounted directly onto the chiplets of the processor, allowing for significantly lower operating temperatures. This is not only interesting for extreme overclockers chasing records but also for gamers and content creators.

Why should I remove the heat spreader from my Ryzen 7000? The heat spreader of the Ryzen 7000 processors is quite thick, partly due to compatibility with older CPU coolers for the AM4 socket. The unnecessary thickness of the heat spreader reduces thermal conductivity, causing the CPUs to operate at very high temperatures around 95 degrees Celsius. By removing the heat spreader, the CPU cooler can be mounted directly on the chiplets of the Ryzen 7000 CPU, drastically lowering temperatures.

To avoid damaging the sensitive chips and to prevent operational issues, the Ryzen 7000 Direct Die Frame replaces the Socket Actuation Mechanism (SAM) of the motherboard.

Better temperatures thanks to a delidded CPU. For gaming PCs and desktop workstations, cooling the processor is crucial to prevent throttling during rendering operations or to achieve high FPS while gaming. Silent PCs for multimedia applications also benefit from improved heat dissipation from the processor. In addition to a good cooling solution, PC enthusiasts often delid CPUs to optimize heat dissipation. Delidding a CPU involves removing the heat spreader of the processor. This is often done to replace the thermal compounds used by the manufacturer with higher quality thermal pastes or liquid metal.
