You only have access to the camera via "data traffic", i.e. either WiFi or the mobile network. If no memory card is inserted, nothing is saved, but you can see a live image, but nothing is saved. If a memory card is inserted, you can "go back in time" and everything is recorded from the time the card was inserted.
