Can this recorder also be used as a normal satellite receiver without recording or playing anything (selecting channels and watching them directly on the TV)?

I myself have the Panasonic HDD/BD recorder DMR-BCT735. You can watch TV and record at the same time. But of course you can't switch over when the recording is running.
It should be the same with this newer model. So: yes, it works.
