Does the smart tag also work with a non-Samsung smartphone? Specifically, I'm asking about a Xiaomi device. I have found mixed information about this on the internet. Some say that it only works with Samsung devices, others say that other Android devices with the Smartthings app also work.

The Apple AirTag only works with iPhones, and the Samsung SmartTag 2 only works with Samsung Galaxy smartphones. However, Samsung SmartTags are also compatible with "non-Samsung devices" that use Android 8.0 or higher.

Hello,
the Galaxy SmartTag2 is only compatible with Galaxy smartphones and tablets with Android 9.0 and higher and 3 GB RAM. The SmartThings app is also required.
