Restrictions on mass storage
You can't just plug in a USB-C stick and transfer data back and forth: Apple has strict security requirements here. Only photos and videos in a camera folder are recognised and can be loaded onto the iPad - a memory card reader for SD memory cards works relatively smoothly. In an initial test, we were able to transfer 2 GB of photos in 55 seconds or at just under 40 MB/s.
