Is this HD designed for continuous operation? Which HD is installed?
I have already had two WD Passport hard drives of different models give up the ghost irreparably after not too severe shocks (fall from < ½m height). Particularly problematic is that WD tends to combine the USB controller with the HDD controller, i.e. the hard drive in the housing no longer has a SATA connection at all, only USB. Unfortunately, this means that you can forget about all the low-level tools with which you might have been able to save "normal" hard drives or the data on them.
In my opinion, unusable for continuous use (or use as a trustworthy storage medium at all).
I would not use this model as a replacement for an internal HD
External USB hard drives are not suitable for continuous operation. For this purpose there are sepz. For this purpose, there are separate hard drives such as WD Red, etc. which ensure continuous operation in a cooled housing.
External hard drives are generally not suitable for continuous operation. Data transfer via USB3 alone is not advantageous if you want to process large data sets quickly. SATAII / SATAIII deliver better values for this.
Since they are easy to transport, they are recommended as portable mass storage.
In general, hard drives should not be dropped, as they contain very sensitive components.
From my many years of experience with many hard drives, I can say that no hard drive will fail if you treat it "normally". (Store it horizontally, cool it sufficiently, do not subject it to extreme shocks).
So far, the hard drive works well. I have connected it to my Samsung Smart TV as a data hard drive for videos, music and pictures. Whether it is suitable for this purpose in the long term remains to be seen, as it is not designed for continuous operation. However, the TV is not in continuous operation, or when it is switched on, the data on the hard drive is not constantly accessed.
In general, you can't expect great reliability from these WDs. I have already had two defective HDs. Both times nothing could be saved.
I don't know...in our case it is used to make the weekly total backup of the computer.
