I have set it up as an access point with the same WLAN name as the router and the devices automatically switch to the transmitter with the stronger signal.

Question a bit unclear: my devices always switch to the strongest signal, you have the same password, but you might be asked the first time. When I take my tablet into the living room, it takes the stronger signal. You connect to the router and if you switch it off, the extender simply reconnects.
