the macbook air has 2 Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40 Gbit/s) ports. i think it needs some kind of adapter?

The question can only be answered if you know exactly which model and year it is. Not all MacBooks have HDMI ports, and those without sometimes require completely different adapters.
