Why does a seemingly original defective controller have such a good rating? Do these "5-year-old problems" still exist or can you currently buy it without a guilty conscience?

I can't say that, I've never had any problems with it.
I bought one because the rubber on the old one had come loose.
As with everything, there will be a few percentages with defects and others that are OK. The A button on the old one was stuck, but as I only use pedals, it didn't bother me. The new one is OK.

It's not a bug, it's a feature. They are all originally defective. Oh how nice it is to look at the controller and imagine how I use it.
With the exception of you, I would give you a recommendation to buy a PlayStation.
