It takes a few days until it smells less. After that, the plastic smell comes back every now and then, I suspect it comes from the small openings in the corners.
These are probably some kind of pressure relief valve, when the mattress is fully inflated and you sit in it, it smells for a short time afterwards, when it is not fully inflated it happens less often.
