Adjust the grind by tightening or loosening the knob on the top. Use a coarse setting for steaks or tomato salad, a medium setting for pizzas, and a fine setting for soups and sauces. If your mill is difficult to grind, especially on the fine setting, try cleaning the grinding mechanism. Turn the mill upside down, loosen the knob to the coarsest setting, and turn the lid. This will release any large peppercorns or salt crystals that may have become stuck. Turn the knob back to your desired setting. It is advisable not to put salt in your pepper mill, as this can cause the carbon steel mechanism to corrode.
