The piñatas are colorful figures made of cardboard or papier-mâché, traditionally filled with fruits, but at children's birthday parties, they are filled with candies and small gifts. They are also popular in Latin America and Spain during Christmas and Easter.

Similar to the game of hitting the pot, children with their eyes covered take turns hitting the piñata with a stick until it breaks and surprises rain down. The piñata usually hangs from a rope above the children and can only be reached with the stick. One child at a time is blindfolded, and each child gets three attempts to hit the piñata and break it. When the piñata breaks, all the children can pick up as much as they can catch. Songs are sung to help the child find and hit the piñata.
