In 2019, ÖBB launched an upgrade program to renew the double-decker trains (DOSTO). Approximately 100 cars will be optimized to modern Cityjet standards by 2023. The modernization includes onboard Wi-Fi, new seat upholstery, multi-purpose areas in each intermediate car with more space for bicycles, strollers, and luggage, as well as newly established relaxation zones. In May 2022, halfway through the ongoing DOSTO upgrade program, the electric locomotive 1116 181 was painted in Cityjet design. With this, ÖBB is making an important statement for attractive offerings in public transport. The locomotive will not only be used in front of Cityjet trains but also in regular passenger and freight services.
