In 2011, Deutsche Bahn AG commissioned Siemens Mobility to build up to 300 new high-speed trains for use in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The new trainsets of the BR 412/812, developed jointly by Siemens and Bombardier, are powered by several cars known as powercars. The train configuration includes various modular units ranging from five-part to 14-part trains. This concept allows the train to be easily adapted to the individual requirements of transport companies regarding desired acceleration, speed, and number of seats.
