QNAP customers are beta testers - and their data too
I am gradually losing interest in being a QNAP owner. My experience with the products is truly Jekyll & Hyde. The hardware is quality, high performing, innovative, and the upgrade options are great. The QTS operating system also offers many promising features, including Qtier. But promising is too often where it stops with QNAP. In my experience, the QTS operating system simply does not deliver the stability one expects from a data storage solution. It is inconceivable that I regularly have problems with the basic functionalities of their products, namely storage. I would be more understanding if non-critical features and apps struggle with reliability, but the fact that my data is often at risk is unacceptable. Above all I expect QNAP to deliver a solution that makes it easy to keep my data safe. Last weekend I tried to upgrade my storage pool to Qtier. As a result, I cannot access my data because the storage pool is in error mode, and four days later QNAP support has still not resolved my problem. This was just the latest problem. In conclusion, don't change anything on your QNAP if you need to deliver a project or prepare your taxes in the near term. Search the web or browse the forums and you will find that QTS is plagued with issues, among them, gaping security holes. Developing software is complicated and this should lead QNAP to the conclusion to stop biting off more than they can chew. The focus should be on ensuring a stable and secure storage solution; everything else is not a priority if this not the case. I could not care less how great their photo, notes, media apps are if my data is at risk. I should not be put in a position where I weigh the cost benefits of upgrading the firmware to secure my system against potentially losing my data. QNAP, please build a solid QTS release that delivers on all your storage promises. Then, you can sell us the rest of your software and apps.
