Maybe possible without bicycles on it. But maybe the retaining hook on top will jam and damage the paint. I would unhook the thing at the top before opening the tailgate. Or at least try it very carefully.

If the bicycles are not yet on it, it still works just fine. As soon as the carrier is loaded, however, it is no longer possible. This is because the carrier rests on the bumper and transfers the weight. At least that is the case with the VW Touran.
