Home workouts becoming more sophisticated amid functional fitness boom

Home fitness enthusiasts are increasingly ditching traditional gym equipment like exercise bikes for functional fitness gear. Galaxus sales figures reveal that kettlebells, pull-up bars and push-up grips are becoming increasingly popular.

Home workout programmes of the past may have been well intentioned, but people rarely stuck with them (article in German). Now, new home gym equipment is giving aspiring fitness buffs the chance to make their workouts more versatile – and hopefully stick with them for longer. Certain products among this year’s top 20 best-selling fitness and strength training devices have experienced a huge uptick in sales compared to the same period in 2025 : kettlebells (+74%), pull-up bars (+51%), lifting straps (53%) and push-up grips (54%).

Traditional home workouts involving an exercise bike and dumbbells are complemented by a more targeted, athletic approach. Functional fitness – a training style that engages multiple muscle groups simultaneously, strengthening movements you make in your everyday life – is taking living rooms by storm.

Hyrox and running are fuelling the trend

Joël Hulliger, Category Business Manager for Sports at Galaxus, sees a link between current sales figures and the latest fitness trends (article in German): «The trend is shifting towards functional and endurance-oriented forms of training, such as Hyrox, which combines running with functional fitness. At the same time, we’re seeing growing demand for high-quality exercise bikes, particularly spinning and speed bikes. Now that these products are available at more competitive prices, offering better value for money, they’re becoming accessible to a broader target group.»

Limited space, high standards: the ideal combination

Another factor potentially driving these products’ popularity is the living situation of many Galaxus customers. Large, bulky exercise equipment is often tricky to fit into a city flat. Perhaps more and more people want to work out at home, but simply don’t have room for a treadmill or weight machine.

It’s in this situation that kettlebells and pull-up bars prove advantageous – they don’t take up much storage space, they’re ready to use in seconds and they give you a full-body workout.
