Last shells fallen: Nothing presents the phone (1)

Tech manufacturer Nothing launched the second product in its range today in London: the phone (1).

It was already known that Nothing's first smartphone has a special back. The first photos and the so-called Glyph interface with the blinking light pattern were already presented a few weeks ago. Now, shortly before the sales launch, the very last covers of the hyped phone have fallen.

The phone (1) is held together by an aluminum frame and has Gorilla Glass from Corning on both sides. Like the headphones, the young company's first smartphone comes in a white and a black version. These weigh 193.5 grams each.

Mid-range processor and reverse wireless charging

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ works inside the new phone. The specifications of this new mid-range processor were already known before the launch event. However, the information about the device's charging is new.

A 4500 mAh battery supplies the phone (1) with power - the battery is supposed to be recharged within 50 minutes with a 33 watt charger. This is not included - probably to keep the price of the phone lower. Wireless Qi charging is supported and takes place with 15 watts.

If the phone (1) is charged enough, it can supply other devices with 5 watts - for example headphones - via reverse wireless charging.

Deliberately fewer cameras

The display measures 6.55 inches diagonally and has an adaptive refresh rate of 60 to 120 hertz. It consists of a flexible OLED panel and has a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. The display reaches a maximum brightness of 1200 nits and offers 10-bit color depth.

A 16-megapixel lens from Sony comes into play as the facecam, which can record 1080p video at 30 frames per second (FPS). 4K recordings with 30 FPS are possible with the main lenses.

Unlock by fingerprint and face

The phone (1) has space for two SIM cards and is protected from splashing water and dust with IP53 certification. The device can be unlocked via a fingerprint sensor or via facial recognition - the latter is also supposed to work with face coverings. In addition, the device offers Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC with Google Pay for contactless payments.

Fresh Android versions are available for three years and important security patches for four. Back in April, Nothing released the beta version of its in-house Android launcher in the Google Store. The minimalist interface called Nothing OS is pre-installed on the phone (1).

Prices and availability

The phone (1) will be available in more than 40 countries. You can buy it directly from Nothing or selected retailers. The phone (1) is also priced in the mid-range segment. Three storage versions are offered with the following recommended retail prices:

  • 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage for 469 euro
  • 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage for 499 euro
  • 12 GB RAM + 256 GB storage for 549 euro

The official sales launch is on July 21, 2022, although you can already pre-order the device. This is also the case in our store. You can find the link to our product pages here.

«I want it all! The terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles!» – these words spoken by an iconic American TV celebrity could have been mine. It's a take on life I also apply to my job. What does this mean in concrete terms? That every story has its charm; no matter how small, large, exciting or trivial. The more eclectic the mix, the better.
