Class of 1939 - in our year of birth the Second World War began. Despite hardships and suffering, we also remember homemade fudge, spinning tops, driving hoops, jumping rope, hoarding and stealing coal. For many, the rubble wastes were an adventure playground and there were still real winters with frozen lakes where we skated. As teenagers, we took a dance class and danced boogie-woogie, were half-baked and wore petticoats.
