The additional Ethernet channel allows for connecting internet-capable AV components to the home network using only an HDMI cable. Therefore, it is sufficient for the television to be connected to the network via cable. The AV receiver or Blu-ray player then receives not only the actual video signal but also the network through the HDMI cable. This eliminates the need for a network switch and additional cables.
